Plainfield Public Schools Are Offering 6-week, All-Day Summer Learning Camp for $150 per Child

Ninety more students living in the Plainfield Public School District can attend the city’s summer enrichment camp, thanks to a State of NJ Department of Education Grant of $100,000.

The grant will fund Plainfield Public Schools InnovateNJ Summer Learning Camp, in collaboration with 21st Century Learning Centers, School Based Youth Services and Plainfield Community Outreach at Clinton Elementary School and Maxson Middle School.

To qualify for the program students must be in Grades 3 to 8.

The camp runs 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday July 5th through Friday August 12 and costs the public $150 per student.

The camp is based on the station-rotation model with learning centers setup inside the classroom where the children will rotate in core classes of English, Math, Language Arts and Science. The rotational phase will include teacher-led small groups. Then the students will work on end-of-summer theme projects.

“We are excited to be able to expand our summer programs and give more students the opportunity to immerse themselves in core courses and enrichment classes,” said Superintendent Anna Belin-Pyles. “We were part of a very competitive process and we’re excited to hear the panel evaluated our application and found it eligible for the award,” said Zelda Spence Director of 21st Century Learning Centers, who developed the district’s application for the funding.

Application deadline is Friday June 17th. For registration information in English call Zelda Spence at 908-731-4200 x 5381

Plainfield NJ’s public schools are 68% Latino. The small businesses in the community are 80% Latino-owned and the town is now 60 percent Latino and 40 percent African American, according to the U.S. Census and Gloria Montealegre, Community Engagement Liaison for the Public Schools of Plainfield.

“We need to do better and we need the Hispanic parents in our community to push and be more engaged and stand up for these opportunities,” says Montealegre. “Our Latino youth are terribly underrepresented in these programs and are being wooed away in some cases by private schools that do not meet the same standards our public school programming can offer. This program is a tremendous bargain, tremendously affordable way to ensure that your family member or neighbor or some young person you care about has a chance to grow and learn safely this summer away from the TV or excessive, non-educational screen time.”

The deadline for families to register for this new summer program is Friday, June 17. For information directly in Spanish to ensure your child or someone you know a spot in the program call Gloria Montealegre at: 732-754-1321
